A Modern South Asian Bride
Henna Art/Mehndi
by Salma Islam of HennaAllure
Typically in South Asia, there are many
areas of the country that keep different traditions and practice different religion. There is Hindu and Muslim among others. The ones
mentioned hold different ceremony and different offerings, but keep in the
Mehndi Celebration.
Mehndi is the art or practice of applying temporary henna
tattoos, especially as part of a bride or groom’s preparations for their wedding day. It is often done before the
wedding in celebrations with the brides and all the ladies in her life, but
more and more we are seeing Grooms taking part in this celebrations. The Groom will get a smaller art design
and celebrate together.
Henna comes
from the leaf of the henna plant it is grind together, sometimes now more often with essential oils. Orlando based Mehndi artist Salma Islam
creates her own blends and when applied it releases an amazing scent and
color.
The Mehndi is applied to adorn the bride, it is said to make
her look even more beautiful. A elaborate design is applied and drawn on to her
hands and feet. The artist will place
the grooms name hidden within the design. It is said that he searches for it at the end of the
evening, when they are in their private quarters. They also say the darker the henna
design turns on the skin, the more he loves her. Another interesting
fact is that brides are not to do any house chores until the henna fades. Nice.
